BANTRY BRANCH OF COMHALTAS CEOLTEOIRI EIREANN

E-mail Print PDF

Spring Newsletter 2009

We have good news concerning the production of a double CD featuring you and senior Comhaltas members from our branch.  This venture was a huge undertaking and is progressing very well.
A further recording session for some individual musicians will be held shortly and then a lot of work must be done by our excellent sound engineer and graphic designer together with our band of hardworking local senior musicians to compile notes to accompany the CD.  We hope to launch the CD Christmas 09.  Anyone who has photos and or memories they would like to include in the historic booklet are welcome to have these included.

We were asked by Bantry Town Council to hold a performance to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the explosion of the Betelgeuse tanker in Bantry Bay in January 1979, where local and French people tragically were lost.  Many French family  members travelled to Bantry for the occasion as well as family  members of the Irish who were lost.  The performance, which included music and dance was excellent and was well appreciated by the audience.

The Cork fleadh Cheoil is to be held in Ballincollig from the 6th to the 10th of May.  Entries for the competition must be in before th 8th April and all membership must be in before 30th April, no membership after this date.

There is a great traditional session held every Sunday night at The Maritime Hotel from 7pm to 9pm..  This is not a CCE event, but all musicians are welcome.  Beginners would be welcome for the first half hour of the session, while more advanced individuals are welcome to stay on.

There is a traditional music/song/dance weekend  organised in Ballydehob from April 17th – 19th 2009 (this is not a CCE event).  This is a fantastic event and well worth attending.  Workshops are booked out early, so book early.

Our local branch of CCE is planning a fundraising concert later this year.  More details later.

TG4 are looking for traditional dancers, step, set, Sean-nos and brush, to do an audition to go on a TG4 show.  Anyone interested call 027 52689.

Anyone interested in joining our committee is very welcome to come to any of the meetings.
