Jimmy O’Shea was very interested in the photograph of Kieran Dunphy and his father outside of Roches Hotel in Glengarriff as, of course he, along with Irish Nationwide Insurance took over the New St. premises from Dunphys. What I did not know when Jimmy told me was that Levis Chemist were in the house before Dunphys, and only left to go into bigger premises on The Square – now occupied by James Lyons & Co. Another lady also phoned to ask for a copy of the photograph, as she said she worked for a period in Roches Hotel.Lucey’s Pub next door was formerly owned by Harringtons, and for some reason – maybe someone knows – was called “Amsterdams”. Con and Denny Harrington are the two names I remember – Con was a good Gaelic footballer while Denny turned out occasionally for the rugby team.In between the pub and the chemist shop, through a passageway, was where a poor man tried to teach a group of us the rudiments of carpentry. We called him “Crooky”- I think it was because he used to refer to the “crookie benchie” regularly. There was a pub the other side of Dunphys aswell, owned by Jimmy Mia McCarthy and that had a nickname which I can’t remember, but “Krugers” comes to mind.
