Bantry Amateur Boxing Club This was formed in November 2001 by Andy Kerins. We had our first winner in the county championships in 2002, which was Jack Lane. The club has won county and Munster titles and Nadia Barry won our first All Ireland title in 2005. We have had two previous shows in Bantry in November 2004 and in April 2006 The coaches are Andy Kerins and Tim Doyle. Andy qualified as a coach in England and then Ireland. He has also passed the IABA exams and judges contests all over Ireland. The club has current members of twenty five with many more on a waiting list. Training is twice a week in Bantry Boys Club. This increases to six times a week for boxers who make it through to the All Irelands. David Keohane contested the 2003 All Ireland final losing on points. A fearsome effort in the last round almost saw David winning. Niall Healy made it to the semi finals the same year and David was back in the semi finals again in 2004. The club is going very well with very dedicated coaches and boxers and many have represented Cork on numerous occasions. Bantry boxers have competed all over Ireland and Gavin Healy represented Munster versus Ulster previously. Recently Terence Gibbs boxed in the All Ireland bantamweight quarter final in Dublin, losing unluckily by a point to four times Irish champion Michael Kelly of The Immaculata Boxing club, Belfast. This contest was voted contest of the weekend. Superlative effort on Terence’s part. We are very proud of our boxers’ achievements and also of the fact that we can offer a safe, fun environment for our members, not forgetting that they train hard at every session. Altogether there is a good atmosphere at the club, which is appreciated by visiting club from elsewhere. We look forward to a bright future, and would like to wish all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
