A MESSAGE FROM BANTRY BAY HARBOUR COMMISSIONERS PDF Print E-mail
Written by BANTRY HARBOUR COMMISSIONERS
Friday, 01 August 2008

Bantry Bay Harbour Authority has recently received inquiries from members of the public with concerns about fast powered watercraft (speed boats, ribs and jetskis etc) operating in their areas. These types of craft are causing major safety problems in areas where they operate.

The majority of users are responsible and careful but a minority act in a very dangerous manner. The minority are indifferent to the safety of others using local recreational facilities. Their main problem is lack of knowledge of the hazards associated with the power and speed of the boats they are in charge of and the lethal consequences of hitting a person or small boat. Numerous incidents have been reported in all areas
The public are not aware that they can immediately contact their local Garda Station and the Gardai have authority under the Maritime Safety Act 2005 to control reckless boat users.
It is the policy of Bantry Bay Harbour Authority to encourage all water based activities, but that these activities be carried out with due consideration for the safety and welfare of other members of the public.
The Maritime Safety Act 2005 amongst other Acts, was introduced to deal with, among other things, public safety and amenity and to protect natural and other heritage areas. Under the Act the Gardai have authority to take necessary action when requested by members of the public who have concerns on safety or otherwise of fast powered water craft.

Users of fast powered watercraft are also advised to consult the Act for information on their rights and responsibilities.
Copies of the Act are available on the Government website or in the Harbour Office, Wolfe Tone Square, Bantry. Tel 027 53277.

Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners have Draft Byelaws with the Department of Transport and are awaiting Departmental approval before they can be enacted.
The Harbour Authority would like to emphasize that all types of water activity are welcome in Bantry Bay provided that people act in a responsible manner. Also the users of fast speed craft are welcome to contact the Harbour Office to discuss safety issues
